Belonging: It's More Than Just Fitting In
Jan 10, 2025
What Does It Mean to Belong?
“I see your true colours shining through…”
Cyndi Lauper’s iconic song True Colours reminds us that belonging is about being seen and celebrated for who we truly are. No masks, no hiding, just our authentic selves.
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite fit in, you’re not alone. For those of us with brains wired for curiosity, wonder, and creativity, the world can sometimes feel like it’s asking us to dim our true colours just to fit in.
I have been thinking about this a lot and have my own take on what it truly means to belong.
Belonging isn’t about blending in. It’s about shining in spaces that embrace your light.
The Power of Asking Big Questions
Let’s reflect on three big questions to help you reframe how you feel about fitting in versus belonging:
Where do you sit on the continuum of fitting in versus belonging?
Are you masking parts of yourself to fit in?
Or have you found spaces where your true colours are valued?
What do you need to feel like you belong?
Is it a connection?
A deeper understanding of how your brain works?
Or simply the courage to show up as your authentic self?
What gifts does your unique wiring bring to the world?
Like Lauper’s song reminds us, your true colours make the world a brighter, more interesting place.
How does your unique perspective add value to the spaces you’re in?
The Gifts of Being Unique
“Don’t be afraid to let them show…”
Brains wired for wonder often bring extraordinary gifts:
💡 Creativity,
🚀 Innovation, and
🔍 A knack for seeing the world differently.
But when these gifts aren’t understood or valued, it’s easy to feel isolated
I believe that your unique wiring isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a strength to be celebrated.
